This right here is one of my favourite scenes. Just because you can see their relationship with startling clarity after just one day of running around London together. Sherlock is feeling good because there is a triple homicide and a note, he just cure a psychosomatic limp based on a theory and has a flatmate with an intriguing persona. Then the fake drugs bust happened.

Sherlock is a self proclaimed sociopath, he doesn’t, shouldn’t care about what people think. He waves away the condescending attitude of the Yard, society and doesn’t even care about Mycroft’s opinion of him and his wayward ways. 

But John. The moment Sherlock realises that John may view him as anything short of his high functioning self, he immediately becomes defensive. The high pitched (well as high as it’ll go for Sherlock), “shut up,” is the best he could come up with. For the first time, Sherlock felt the need to defend his actions and bad choices in life, because John’s opinions mattered. He wants John to stay, because John said “fantastic,” instead of “piss off.”
